Dermaplaning 101

Shannon Wells

Hi everyone! I’m back today to tell you all about one of our new services, Dermaplaning!

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation technique that uses a very fine, sterile surgical blade to superficially exfoliate your skin and remove vellus hair (peach fuzz).

What are the benefits of Dermaplaning?

The benefits are plentiful! The deeper exfoliation can help eradicate excess oils from the skin that tend to become trapped under dense, hard to remove dead skin cells; it increases blood flow and lymph productivity; Dermaplaning is a great way to increase product absorption- which means your products will work better! It can reduce the signs of aging by improving elasticity and skin texture, reducing the size of pores, softening fine lines and wrinkles, increasing cell turnover and reducing hyper pigmentation; we can even soften scars! Not to mention removing your peach fuzz which will result is less product and makeup usage as well as more radiant skin!

What can I expect during my appointment?

First we will evaluate your skin and review your paperwork; please let us know about and specific concerns! We’ll begin the service by, first, cleansing the skin (It is best to arrive for your appointment with no makeup on!) and may use a product to dehydrate the surface of your skin. During the Dermaplaning itself the technician will maneuver your head and face, during this time the vellus hair and dead skin are removed. At this point you may add on additional services, as available. Your treatment will end with the application of oil free moisturizer and sun block.

Can’t I just shave with a regular razor?

Conventional razors aren’t as fine as the surgical blades used for Dermaplaning and will remove hair and some surface dead skin cells but won’t reach as far or present optimum results. You also run the risk of harming the pore or follicle which may result in a change in hair texture or ingrown hairs.

Is there any aftercare?

After your visit it is recommended to stay out of direct sun and avoid soaking in a pool bath or hot tub for at least 24-48 hours, depending on your skin. As always, we recommend you stay well hydrated and moisturized, and to wear sun screen every day!

How often can I Dermaplane?

It is recommended that you wait a minimum of 4 weeks between Dermaplaning appointments, but other factors may require longer times between services. This is because we want your skin to be fully healed before we treat it again. The top layers of skin will return to their original condition quickly, but the lower layers can take a little more time to normalize.

When will I see results?

You will see some results immediately! After your first visit you will see more vibrant, glowing, smooth, fresh skin; your peach fuzz will be gone revealing a natural glow, and your products will work better. With more treatments you can see further results that may include: Reduced under eye circles, less visible wrinkles and fine lines, cleaner and smaller pores, and improved texture and elasticity.

I hope I was able to answer some of your questions about Dermaplaning! It’s, really, a fantastic service with many benefits.
