When I was a little girl, while everyone I knew was dreaming of their perfect wedding, I was planning my dream honeymoon. Then, I dreamt of the ultimate European vacation. As I’ve gotten older, that hasn’t changed, but my vision has become more refined. After I moved to Colorado (nine years ago), I fell in love with craft beer and breweries. And, after I met and fell in love with my fiance, my love for beer grew as he taught me how to homebrew. Now, we have a nano brewery in our garage with four of his brews on tap, sake fermenting in the kitchen pantry, and 24 bottles of our own red and white wine aging in the basement. To say we have a strong love of beer and the craft of making beer and wine is an incredible understatement. So, when it comes to our honeymoon, we both want nothing more than the Ultimate European Beercation!
Our European Beer Tour
The First Stop 1: Czech Republic
Prague has a number of great establishments for beer lovers. They have a town pub where every table has 4 beer taps. Not only can you self serve, but there is no waiting and plenty of variety!
After a night of drinking in Prague, we will head over to the town of Chodova Plana. This town features the Chodovar Family Brewery and Beer Spa. There they have a half dozen large tubs dedicated to soothing your aches and pains in none other than our beloved beer! There we will do the “Relax I” package which includes 2 nights in Hotel U Sládka , one beer bath for two people (20 minutes), a partial massage (20 minutes), a hot grain pack (20 minutes), two meals each in Restaurant Stará Sladovna, a brewery tour, and a welcome present.
The Middle Stop 2: Germany
Germany is well known for their centuries old Bavarian beer traditions, including the famous German beer purity law known as the Reinheitsgebot. Introduced in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria, the decree allows for only hops, barley, water to be used in their beer recipes. Later, when they discovered that yeast actually made the magic of alcohol, they added it into the recipe. There, we will head over to the oldest brewery in the world: Weihenstephan. There they feature an amazing Berliner Weisse that is supposed to be out of this world. Next, we will head over to Cologne where they make their signature kolsch style where the beer is made with ale yeast but is finished with lagering.
The Final Stop 3: Belgium
With 180 breweries and home to trappist beers, Belgium is a dream destination for beer lovers. There we will head to Delirium Cafe in Brussels. Delirium is known for their Guinness Book world record for the bar with the most beers in the world! Next, we will head to Bruges, a medieval town, with beautiful architecture and excellent beer. They are known for their dubbels, triples, and quads! Finally, we will head to Rochefort, Belgium to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Saint-Remy. This is an active monastery brewhouse. These brewhouses are the home of trappists beers that have existed in Europe since the middle ages! The Rochefort features tasting plates of meats and cheeses as well as tasty flights of beers.
By the end of our dream European Beercation, it is safe to say, I’ll be all beer-ed out for a while. Or, at least a day or two 🙂
